Last October I was shopping for another bike, I wanted something newer than my Old GS1150, something fuel injected,
Any how a mate of mine had bought a Gixer 1k at an auction, and it was an insurance write off,
It turned out the frame was bent, I paid what he paid a $1200 bucks about 500 quid, the bike run, and I thought, all I had to do was buy another frame, that I could register, and swap out the motor, Naively I came across a whole bike a 1998 GSXR 750 srad for the sum of $500 bucks around 200 quid, it was a complete bike, though the engine was toast, apparently the young guy who owned the 750 had been spending allot of time on the rear wheel, with no oil, the shop I had bought it from had bought the bike off the young guy for parts.
I sold what I didn’t need, and made some money, plastics, wheels, etc,
So my next move was to drop the 1000 motor in to the SRAD rolling chassis, all engine mounts were different, and I had to make adapter plates for each top side mounts, the rear engine mount had to be chopped off and ma remade, and the bottom rear of the engine crankcase one the mounts had to be narrowed by 1/8 th of a inch on each side.
Within a weeks or so I had got the motor in to the srad, and the bike was running, the rear sub frame on the srad looked like arse, so I cut out of a sheet of 8mm 6030 aluminum
Side rails they looked like short hockey sticks, I had planned to have these cut again later on by water jet, but they came out so fine I didn’t bother, I cut them out with a wood band saw, with a metal cutting blade.
the rear tail fin was bought from a ducati dealership, I went in the ducati shop to inquire about the price of a plastic monster tail fin, and was told 450 bucks, (all my profit I had made from the selling off of the parts, I couldn’t afford that, but as I was leaving he told me the aftermarket aluminum tail fin was 80 dollars, so I came away happy.
I bought stainless steel, brake hose, the oil cooler was damaged on the 1000 motor so I bought a transmission cooler from a Chevy V8 truck, that had the same volume, and the earls hosing, new tires, CRG mirror, the top triple tree, I converted to take bars MX Kawasaki with the help of a pair of pulled back risers from a YAMAHA VIRAGO 1100,
The clocks, oil cooler, and cheep headlights made from car spotlights, were mounted with the original clipons with the bars removed.
I went back to the ducati shop and bought an aluminum monster front mudguard, and another tail fin, and made the front fly screen, on my trusty 100 dollar band saw.
On my first run, I couldn’t believe the performance from this one K motor, the bike was showing less than 4000 kilometers, not even run in properly. I didn’t have endless amounts of cash to swing at the bike, I was lucky the 1000 came with a yosh pipe, the owner had bout weeks before he crashed it, the bike was running lean after I had cut the tri oval down to 300mm, to suite the stocky look of the whole Machine, so my friend leaned it up, at low and high revs and left the middle the same, with his Yoshimura box.
The overall bike is 4 inches shorter on the swinging arm, and the front rake is a little tighter than the standard K series, the 1000 motor came from, and with the standard srad 750 gearing it wheelies to my enthusiasm at the slightest pull on the gas.
It maybe, something that not everyone likes the look of, but the bike is all mine, there isn’t anything on this bike, that you would probably find on another, and I think the thing is the real MONSTER
