New rider and a 750cc sportbike

#1 Unread post by t_bonee »

A blurb about Kellen Winslow of Cleveland Browns fame. Seems like the Suzuki GSX R750 was a bit much for him. I found it interesting since I read the 600cc sportbike sticky a couple weeks ago. Glad I'm looking to buy a cruiser.

That much damage from a 35mph spill?? hmmmm....... I smell a rat....

I think he may have been going a tad quicker than that....
Don't give up.

Not now, not soon, not after being continually knocked down.

If you never give up, you can never truly fail.

I'm a big football fan so I know of the guy. He's kind of a prima donna - not that he has a choice, his dad, the original Kellen Winslow, taught him well. At least he had the sense to be riding in a parking lot before he knew what he was doing... too bad the bike salesman didn't advise him to start a little smaller. Scratch that, the saleman probably tried. I imagine that a twenty-something, six foot something multi-millionaire probably doesn't listen when someone is telling him he needs a less powerful bike. If I was as big and young and rich as he was I probably wouldn't listen either.

Update!!! - I just heard on the local sports station that this guy might have violated a clause in his contract that prohibits unauthorized 'dangerous activities' - kind of a standard clause in big-money sports contracts - they don't want you missing the football season because you twisted your ankle in a pickup basketball game - and they might force him to repay a 4 million dollar signing bonus. Ouch! There's a good reason not to get a 750cc sport bike if I ever heard one.

im sure it was a case of "im 6'4" 240 pounds i need at least a 750cc cause im so big anything smaller isnt rideable for me'.

if that were the case i still dont see how people relate engine size to actuall riding position. usually the bigger faster the engine the more cramped the riding position is making it worse off for someone tall like that. or they think because they are over 200 pounds a 600(or 250) wont be able to move them, like theres a big difference in perfomance(for a new rider) with a lil extera weight for the bike to move. a 150 pound rider vs a 240 pound rider isnt going to be a big difference on a 600cc bike, especially when your first learning.

Great first ride story he'll have. I'm sure it wasn't 35 mph, not from that damage.

cb360, I think your analysis as to what happened is right on the money; he wanted a sportbike, the dealer told him the 600 was the smallest one, so of course he couldn't have the smallest one since he's such a big guy with a HUGE ego, from what I have heard.

Moral of the story: take the MSF course and start small!
