Need extra key(s)

#1 Unread post by davetremaine »

I just purchased a used '04 xl1200c. HD dealer sez I have to buy new ignition-that comes with 3 keys. Is there any other way? ie, does Home Depot or Lowes duplicate Harley keys?

I have yet to find someplace other than the stealer to make keys for me however all I had to do was bring my key to the stealer and they made one for me right there.

I've had dealers make me keys, i also found a napa auto parts store that carried motorcycle blanks. Saying you need an ignition though, that can't be right. I'd ask in the harley user group forum. It's easy to join, go to user groups in teh bar above, join the harley user group and once accepted you have access to the harley forum. Pretty sweet deal to get in touch with harley owners for all your new bike questions

Enjoy the new bike!

No Harley Dealers want you to buy the ignition. Tis true.
Dyin'? Boy, he can have this little life any time he wants to. Do ya hear that? Are ya hearin' it? Come on. You're welcome to it, ol' timer. Let me know you're up there. Come on. Love me, hate me, kill me, anything. Just let me know it.

Check eBay. I've seen ignition and key sets for other bikes.

Don't have a Harley, but a key shop was able to cut a key for both my Yamaha and my Honda...

As long as it's a normal key that doesn't have any of those whiz-bang security features like embedded chips, any locksmith shop should be able to duplicate a key. Some places like hardware stores may not have the right kind of blanks for motorcycles, but I've never had a problem at an actual locksmith. In my opinion, you're more likely to get a duplicate that works well by going to a pro.

If anyone can cut a key, they can. Excellent people to do business with. Fair prices. Never cut a key for me that didn't work perfectly. I use the Colleyville store. The people working there told me if you send them an original and a SASE they'll be happy to cut keys. Give them a call: 817 498-9797 to make arrangements to suit your needs.
