I've got an old gas tank, and the cap for it was destroyed by the previous owner (whole drilled through, wire stuck through to keep it closed). So I need to somehow replace or maybe fix the cap.

Most imporantatly, I want a working and safe cap. Secondly, I want ot to look good.

So anyone have ideas of how to deal with this? Here's a look at it:

I've got a couple of ideas. One of which is cutting it out and welding something new on, but that's pretty tricky. Otherwise, maybe shaving the rim down to the correct shape so that I can make sort of a "grenade pin" style cap, where a pin goes though the rim, and a new stopper sort of plug to keep it closed.

Dennis Kirk has some aftermarket gas caps that you could probably pick up and have fitted to your bike. While the caps are made to fit specific bikes, I'm sure a competent welder could do the alteration to your tank to have the new cap fitted.

well if there's no way to get a NOS one and you're going to go through the trouble of welding on it. As long as the gasket is still salvageable (or fabricateable) I'd weld over the driled hole, grind/sand it to shape and have it re-chromed.
