Hey guys, I'm new here. I came to these forums hoping I can discuss about bikes and such. I was hoping you can help me with some questions I have . Anyway I'm a pretty young guy at 17, I've been riding dirtbikes my whole life and now I want to get a street bike. I already have a good bike that I want to purchase, I did a lot of research on it. Its a Yamaha YZF600R, It is not the R6, It's the more chilled out version, like an Everyday version. A lot of people told me thats a pretty good bike for me because it is forgiving and easy going. What do you guys think, I have expirence with dirtbikes. Also I was wondering what a good cheap insurance company is. Thanks a bunch guys!
Theres gals here too ! No advice on the bike, but good luck and have fun! As far as insurance I know at your age and being a male, it won't be cheap. I use Progressive, just check around. You can get quotes online!
The YZF600R is Yamaha's previous generation top shelf 600 supersport. It was large and in charge for like two years before the R6 came out. The ergonomics might be more comfortable then the R6 but it is still pretty much a screamer. If I remember correctly it makes as much yank as the R6 does up until like 10k rpm where the R6 comes alive. I would look for something a bit more moderate perhaps, unless you spent your dirt riding time on 500 two strokes or something.
On the flip side, I have heard it's underrated and a pretty good and affordable bike.
It's a better choice than an R6 but I still don't think it's a good beginners bike. Check out the stickies in the new riders section. Those bikes are true beginners bikes so some that are grey area (sv-650 and ninja 650r).
They will also be cheaper to insure. Check the online quote engine at progressive and walk a few bikes through- the difference may just convince you to go for one of the bikes in the stickies for a few years until you have more riding experience and a good riding history for the insurance company
If you haven't gotten licensed yet a sportbike such as the YZF600R would cost over $3,000/year to insure..
A SV650s or Ninja 650R would be about $2,000 to insure.
Actually, those prices are what I would have to pay; I've had my motorcycle license for 7 months and my drivers license for 1 1/2 years, so you would pay more.
I pay around $300 for my 200cc and I'm planning on keeping it until the insurance prices for the bigger bikes go down.
Edit: Oh yeah, it doesn't matter how long you have been on bikes, only how long you've had your license.
if you're in jersey, pennsylvania, or i think delaware, you can get "Rider Insurance"...my rate is 159/year for just the liability...with premium it's four payments of 180 for the whole year...meanwhile geico and progressive are between 800 - 3000/year...i'll take the rider insurance haha
