The first question you should have is not how hot is that gear going to be, or what do I do with it when I get where I'm going, or even how much is it going to cost. It should be, what do I want to be wearing when I slide down the pavement at 35mph? How long do I want to be in the hospital afterwards? How much does road rash hurt, and for how long?
Those guys who you see riding down the road aren't going to take your fall, you are. How prepared do you want to be when that happens? After you make that decision, you are ready to start shopping for gear.

+1 ^^^
Think about it this way... Next time you're driving at 35 MPH, look down at the asphalt running by you. Now think about how rough asphalt is. Now think about how well your skin would survive running against that asphalt. I've got a buddy who dropped his Hayabusa at 5MPH because of sand. You couldn't tell on him because he was wearing full gear, but his fairings looked like they'd been down at 30... At 5 it even ground down part of the metal parts that stuck through the fairing! Just keep all that in mind when you're thinking about gear.

If you want to wear jeans, look into Draggin Jeans - they're lined with Kevlar and so will offer you a LOT more protection than regular jeans (which will do almost nothing). I got a bunch of stuff from their Australian site, which has much better selection than the US site. http://www.dragginjeans.com.au/
As for just riding to school, the most you'll have to worry about is looking cooler than everyone else. Leather jacket, Leather boots, helmet under your arm...
All gear, all the time.

Motorcycle equipment comes in Leather, Textile and Mesh.
Each maker makes their stuff a bit differently. It fits different body types. One may find that they use a different maker for their boots, gloves, jacket, pants and helmet. I personally do. I've found what fits me and fit is very important.
Leather is the most protective, then textile, then mesh. Jeans don't hold up for very long (about five feet).
You can get hurt just riding to school. I was hurt a quarter of a mile from my house just riding to work.
