Please, please, please call me an idiot........

I have been floating around these parts for some time and it seems to me that recently more and more people have been ridiculed for asking questions. So I guess it's my turn.

I recently passed MSF and I now have my "M" endorsement. I also went out and picked up a copy of David L. Hough's book Proficient Motorcycling which I read cover to cover (even though I don't ever plan on getting a sidecar....lol).

Now what I'm wondering about is "blipping the throttle" when downshifting. That never came up in MSF nor did I read anything about "blipping the throttle" in Proficient Motorcycling. I know I'm an idiot for not knowing what or how "blipping the throttle" works but would someone please be kind enough to enlighten me?

Thanks

Blipping is revving the engine while the clutch is pulled in. It helps match the engine RPM's to the speed the drivetrain will force the engine to run when the clutch is let out again. This reduces the abrupt jump that happens when the engine is suddenly forced to speed up and tries to slow down the drivetrain (engine braking) as a result.

So if I understand correctly would it go a little like this?

1. Roll off throttle
2. Pull clutch in
3. "Blip" or rev throttle
4. Ease clutch out

shift?
what's that?
I guess I should be shifting before I "blip" the throttle?

If you've got the engine speed well matched, you can let the clutch out pretty fast.

Just a note: It's not always necessary to do..especially if you're trying to slow down. I think it takes a bit of practice to get a feel for what works best for you.

Mistercory, your question has already been answered by other members but I would like to add something anyway...

This is TMW. There is no such thing as a stupid question here.

Okay, you're an idiot...

Nah, just kidding, but you did ask me to...

The only stupid question is the one not asked... With that said, you might want to use the search function for a lot of your questions, as I bet most of them have already been answered on this site.
