Carter rides to second in 125cc class

Hawke's Bay's Adam Lawrence seized the lead in the second and final round of the 125cc class at the North Island junior motocross championships in Rotorua at the weekend.

The Onga Onga rider relished the hot and dusty conditions on the Rotorua Motorcycle Club's Suzuki Motocross Park at Horohoro to finish the 15-16 years series on 187 points - a lead of 25 points over Rotorua's Rhys Carter and Taupo's Lee McKinstry.

While the trio battled it out during the hard and fast 15-minute motos, Lawrence's lead from round one in Wanganui meant he had to finish only

in the top four places in each of the five motos to secure the title. He claimed two seconds, a fourth and seventh placing in the five race championship, while Carter came back strongly in the final motos with two first placings.

Wellington's Jayden Jessup narrowly won the junior 12-14 years 125cc class with a three-point advantage over Gisborne's Matt Hunt and Taupo's Brad Groombridge. Leading after the first series with 41 points, Jessup was pushed hard by Hunt, who won three of the five motos and finished second in the other two.

Groombridge also took third place in the 13-16 years 85cc class after solid riding saw him win four of the five motos at Rotorua. Wellington's Michael Menchi clinched the title following consistent performances across the two events while Masterton's Mason Wilkie finished third.

Local riders to perform well included John Phillips who finished third in the 11-12 years 85cc class and Ryan Knight and Dion Picard who finished second and fourth respectively in the 8-10years 85cc class.

The two-day event attracted 160 entries from riders from Kaitaia to Wellington and five from the South Island.
