V-Star heating up

Have a 2006 V-Start Classic. Had it serviced after 600 miles... now seams to run hotter than when first got it. Wondering if the oil put in it when serviced was lighter.....would putting 20w40 in help lower the heat a bit?

Also get a bit of vibration after 50+ mph... :?

Not sure about the heat issue --

But can tell you that these are high revving Vtwins, and are famous for being loud at 50+mph. I'm in Canada, so forgive the metric system. At 100kmh, my 1100 hums. At 110, she sings. At 130, she's screaming. But. . . I know of many people who push their 1100s much harder than I do, and it seems the bulletproof engine can take it; and it's just the way they're built.

The vibes are likely something you're going to have to live with.

That and constantly reaching for a 6th gear, IMHO.

If you're looking for a new motor oil, most of the guys I jam with on the 1100 riders forum swear by Amsoil 20w50.

I just started using it and my bike is running noticeably smoother.

Your dealer may have adjusted the carbs to run a little leaner, which will cause it to run hotter. You might want to have them check it again. Don't change the oil grading, stick with what is recommended in the manual or you're liable to void the warranty if something happens to the engine as a result.

As for the vibration, that is something that should be addressed immediately, especially if it wasn't there before you dropped it off for servicing. It may be a wheel weight has gone missing, or it could be something more serious like a motor mount that has come loose and needs to be re-torqued. Don't hesitate to voice your concerns to the dealer, if you don't think something is right it is their obligation to check it out.

Thanks for the info.. will try changing the oil with recommended book weight. If that doesn't work I'll take it to the shop for the heat issue and vibration. I have the extended warrantee on it. Will let you know how turns out... :thankyousign:

just some things to point out on my 06 650 classic.
Make sure your choke is pushed in all the way. I didnt push in my choke when i rode sometimes and wondered why the bike was so warm!
You may also want to look at a Carb Synch. You can make a tool for under $5 and it should help eliminate w/ the vibration.

Bikes run hot. Don't forget, you were following the break in procedures prior to this. Which means you wouldn't have been running it as hard or (more then likely). Unless your temp warning light is coming on, I wouldn't worry about it. Changing oil grades won't make a difference. All it affects is the way it handles heat generated. Don't bother with that.

And bikes vibrate, it's not a car. The engine isn't rubber mounted and hydrolically damped. It's hard bolted to the frame, and while it does have counter-balancers on it, it's still going to vibrate somewhere in the rev range.

My LS650 vibrated constantly.
My Honda 599 vibrated like crazy at 6000 rpm
My ZX6-R vibrates at 8000rpm

They just do.
