K75 locking luggage?

#1 Unread post by Texfire »

One of the bikes I'm looking at is a K75, but the luggage on it just latches and is not locked or secured to the bike. I'd like to be able to store stuff on the bike without worrying about it walking away, but my search for aftermarket locking luggage or racks for luggage have come up empty.

Does anyone know of a way of securing the sidebags on a K75? This may be a decision point for me on the bike.

Have you tried looking at Givi luggage? How about BMW's accessories page?

No joy with either. Basically I'm striking out with any thing other than topcases for the K75s.

Hmmm. What do you mean it just "latches" and doesn't lock? Do you use a key?

There are two handles on BMW luggage. One is the latching mechanism and the other is the locking mechanism. You have to "unlock" the latches to attach the bag to the luggage rack. To remove the key (and lock the bag), you 've got to first push down both handles, THEN turn the key, which locks the bag, and locks the bag to the bike.

If the luggage doesn't work like this, it sounds like something is broken. If the luggage is BMW luggage, you can easily get a replacement lockset for the hard luggage on the bike.

The hard bags that I saw on the K75 were hard plastic and consisted of two plastic shells that split on the bottom along a hinge. They were closed with two latches that fastened the two halves together along the top. An additional latch secured the front of the "bag" to the frame of the motorcycle, with some "hooks" on the backside of the case attaching to the frame alongside the passenger seat. I think they are the standard hard bags for this model, I've seen others like them on pictures of other K75RTs.

While they latch, there is no locking mechanism on the case or latches that would keep someone from coming up and opening the case or unlatching it from the frame. There is no option for locking it with the key like on K100 or later models. That's what I mean by "unsecured". Since my bike has to be parked outside in the parking lot it's vulnerable to theft and vandalism. My jeep has been broken into twice and one of the plastic windows slashed so I'm not being pessimistic when I lock anything I don't want to lose.

Posted your problem on my local BMW forum. Here are the responses:

There IS a lock on not only the bags closure, but the mount. But the Earlier K-bikes have a nifty little cover on the key hole that is hard to see if you don't know what you are looking for.

Jim

PS some are the Barrell type locks, and some flat type, but the flat type have slick little covers that you might not realize cover the keys.

On my K75 it's really easy to pull the whole lock out of each, if you're not careful.

Not sure if these help.

Actually they hit the nail on the head. I appreciate the assistance.

I actually don't feel too bad about missing it, the salesman didn't know they were there either, the manager of the dealership had to point them out. Now if I can just find an owner's manual to answer other questions like this...
