Hi!
I got this scooter, 49,5cc, I'm not a fan of scooters, so I was thinking to take it apart and put everything in a mountain bike or dirt bike frame. I want to make it lighter, because when it goes uphill, it's like a joke. I saw some people on youtube have done it: http://youtube.com/watch?v=lnFhjVug0sI
If I do this, would it be street legal if I put in all the electronics (lights etc.), if not, what do I need to do to make it street legal? Any suggestions? Thanks!
Would this be street legal?

I would think it would certainly NOT be street legal, but it should be perfectly legal as a bicycle.
That is, do not try to add lights and tag it, but continue to bicycle in the bicycle lanes except now you can boost up hills when you're tired
.
I'm not even sure that's legal exactly but I have seen some people around here that have done that (NYS) and have seen electrically (electric motors) propelled bicycles for sale so that has to be legal.

In most states, your cycle needs to be equipped with a human powered propulsion system in order to be considered either a bicycle or a moped (motor driven bicycle). The contraptions in question are only motor driven.itjstagame wrote:I would think it would certainly NOT be street legal, but it should be perfectly legal as a bicycle.

In South dakota just add lights blinkers and horn and register as home made. Course they will register an ATV for street.(as a MC) Other states are dsifferent. In most states under 50cc needs no registration or tags or motorcycle endorsment. Some states do not even require a drivers licence. Check with your states DMV.
