It's not the top five that'll kill ya, it's the bottom five.

No control
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

Always wear a helmet, eye protection, and protective clothing. Never ride under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The killer mistakes:

1. Carrying too much corner speed, without knowledge of countersteering in emergencies= run wide.

2. Lose the front from braking in slippery conditions mid-corner = lowside slide = run wide.

3. Lane position to observe/maneouvre. You could write a book on this. Being in the right place at the right time instead of the wrong one.

4. Lane position to be observed. You can hid in traffic if you want to, or if you don't think about who can see you. "I didn't see you!".

5. Braking skill. Any idiot can twist the wrist. How can you get the front to squish down progressively to get the best braking without locking up? Practice.

mmm hmm.

Are there really any studies on this? I could mostly just give you guesses

I'll start with inappropriate gear, too little cheer, too much fear.

overconfidence - all balls, no brains

ego - not letting common sense do the talking

riding beyond your limitations

buying too much bike at first, not just liter bikes, but starting on a bagger or a warrior, vtx1800, m109r just 'cause they're "cool" and not being able to ride the damn thing, getting discouraged, or sloppy, and then either selling the bike at a huge loss, or dumping it

spending money on stupid "poo poo", like a full leather race suit that you'll never use, instead on things you'd actually need, like tires, brakes, and maintainance (actually saw this happen, dude bought an alpinestars full leather suit, wouldn't put new tires on his bike because he was out of money, and promptly dumped the bike on a turn (bald tires, amazing) on the way home, beating the hell out of his brand new suit. moron)
