Bent handle bar on used Yamaha 400 special XS 1980

#1 Unread post by newrider1 »

Hello all,

I am thinking about buying a Yamaha 400 special XS 1980 with 14k miles, new tires, for $500. Is this a good deal? She did say the bike is 'cold blooded' and said that meant it sometimes had a difficult time starting from the cold.

The bike does have a problem in that the front right handlebar is slightly bent inward. Would this bike still be safe to ride? Also, would it be possible to bend the handlebars back without compromising the integrity and safety of them?

Would it be better to buy a new handlebar for this bike and if so, how much would one be and where could I buy it?

I ask because I had never ridden a motorcycle until yesterday when I tried it out at the seller's house. She said that it was dumped one time by her father awhile back. Thank you.

Dave

Handlebars, I've seen then from $15.00 to over $100.00. It depends where you get them. And you have to decide what type to get. Check Flanders or J&P Cycles, even JC Whitney has them.
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

If it runs and looks nice that sounds like a deal. If you clean the carbs and make sure the battery is topped off it won't have any problem starting in the winter. I used to own one of these and it was a blast around town. Kickstart was cool too.
