You and I are in the same "hot spot" right now. If I get the Ninja 250 I want, my current insurance company (Farmers) is going to charge me about 100 or so per month. They must have had a lot of claims on the 250 b/c they throw it in the same category as all their "superbikes."
Funny, though, I got an online quote from Progressive for just the bike, with an unexperienced rider, for only 46-50 dollars per month. So what kind of bike are you thinking about getting? I checked on the 500, and it's about the same to insure. And since you already have a car with Progressive, I'd think they'd be cheaper with you than they are with me.
Check around I guess. I've heard that State Farm is pretty good, but for bikes you have to call an agent (online isn't an option). You could look into BikelinE, GEICO, and Nationwide, though I found them to be more expensive than Progressive. It will also depend on your driving history, experience, age, etc.

Re: Best Insurance
There is none. It depends on your history, the type of bike, type of coverage, where you live and several other factors. The only way to get the best rate is to get numerous quotes with your specifics. A company that is quoting someone a smoking deal in Georgia might be way overpriced for the exact same bike/person in CA.Mason wrote: Anyway whats the best insurance company out there for motorcycles.

Some companies quote the little Ninja high because it's covered in expensive plastic and popular with newbs who often drop it while learning. You can tell because most of the full coverage premium is on the comp/collision side. The liability portion is usually in line with other small displacement bikes.ninja_nate wrote:You and I are in the same "hot spot" right now. I was talking with a farmer's agent and he was saying that sport bikes get ripped, if you want to save with them get a cruiser, he out right mentioned harley davidson as one of the cheaper ones to insure, and he may have been a harley fan, but i have noticed that ninja's and other sport style bikes take a premium.

Ridiculous! A $100-$150 premium on a Ninja 250 each month!?! That's nuts, maybe it's due to one's location or driving record? I only paid $312 last year for the CB650 at full coverage, which wasn't too bad at all. And now i'm paying about $516 a year to fully insure a VTR1000 through progressive,... But I can't really complain so much being that i'm only 21, nor do I have that perfect of driving history (careless driving, a couple following too close violations, as well as a few speeding tickets). So I am very happy to hand over $43 a month to ride a liter bike...
But doesn't state farm insurance base their rates solely on displacement, regardless of motorcycle class? I would check their rates if I were looking to insure a 250.

I'm finding this to be true where I live, too. To insure an 07 Ninja 500 would only be 23/month! But to insure an 08 Ninja 250 is generally over 100! To insure an SV650 would only be about 45/month. It is ridiculous! I've always believed that insurance companies will do everything they can to rip off anyone they can. Of course, I want comp and collision, especially being a new rider, so I'm sure that jacks up the cost. But I think in MO, if you finance your vehicle, you're required to have the coverage anyway.matthew5656 wrote:Ridiculous! A $100-$150 premium on a Ninja 250 each month!?! I'm not happy. I don't know about the OP, but I'm almost 27 and I have a pretty clean driving record so far. I've been with Farmers for about 4 years now, and I can't believe that they're going to jack me with bike insurance for a beginner's bike. Makes me want to ignore the advice of this forum and buy a bigger bike. But I won't. I'll "ride out the storm" with a small bike, pay the premium (Go Progressive at 46/month), and then maybe move up eventually.
