So, thefree XJ650 is lookin good so far(actually is an 82' I found out)
So, what is does is this: I'll apply full choke, hit the start button & it might give a little initial chug, like it's teasing me that it kinda wants to start, but it won't really start until I have cranked on it for some time.
If I spray some gas into the rear of the carbs directly(with intake boots off), that seems to prompt it to start immediately: by coaxing it with a few sprays whilst cranking.
However, now with intake boots back on, I seem to have to try for some time to get it to finally stay running(cannot obviously spray into carbs now), and I am finding I'm wearing my battery down & need to jump it to get the bike running.
So, am I NOT getting the full 'choke effect' or something?
I even reached under & manually cranked the choke 'rod' up so I knew I was maxing out the choke.
The condition seems to be worst if it gets cold, and/or damp.

These old xj's HATE the cold.
I find that the carbs need to be primed each time I start the xj. Turn the petcock to PRI for about 5 - 10 seconds, (w/ the bike upright not on the side stand) give the float bowls a chance to fill, turn petcock back to ON then start.
See if that works.
