Exploring the Ozzy Ranges by Foot

#1 Unread post by CentralOzzy »

A riding buddy & I decided to go for a cruise out into the local MacDonnell Ranges the other day & do some exploring. These ranges are so vast even after living here more than a decade we still haven't seen all of them, I doubt we ever will really.

Anyway here is the day in the form of a pictorial.

A DEEP PLUNGE POOL INTO THE ROCK WALL!
This would have taken thousands of years to create!

HERE IS A MONSTER OF A CAVE
High up on the range, one day I'll go in it!

SHARP SPIKEY GRASS
Called Spinifex covers some of the range

ANCIENT CYCAD PLANTS
Of this type are only found in Central Oz, This is a very old specimen, rare indeed!

These plants are very slow growing!

By the end of this adventure my feet were very tired from the rough track. We must have walked 17 Kays + .Next time we are going to check out a side Gorge we spotted. Can't wait! Thanks for looking at my Pics!

Al, I didn't know you were into hiking, too. Looks like a nice trip. I've hiked almost every trail in Yosemite, including Half Dome which is about 18 miles round-trip and includes a 4000 foot elevation gain. That, of course was in my more in-shape days.

Looks like a good tramp, can help but notice there where no pics of any wild life, is there any? Great pics and look forward to some more when you check out the cave.

Yeah... where are the animals? Great pix though. You got kangaroos in your region? I guess they seem commonplace to you, but from where I'm sitting it's a wildly exotic animal. Let's have it Oz... what are the most common animals you see when you are out riding or hiking?

OK, some feedback...I like that. :D

For me it's not so much about the hiking, it's the Exploring! What's up there? What's around that bend....etc.
Having said that, Hiking is part of what I do for a living. My :littlebike1: motorcycle adventures are about going to wild places (Outback) & unlocking clients 'wilder' side. I like to find & push peoples barriers a bit. I enjoy seeing them do things they don't normally do. Such as climbing/scrambling up to a lookout, that possibly no white person has ever seen before. Then there is swimming, now that if heaps of fun in the warmer months (Jan,Feb,March, :icecream: ) and finding remote waterholes is like searching for the grail! The payoff of course is to cool-down after the hike.

It's funny cause after our adventure, hiking is the last thing clients expected to do on a motorcycle tour. Read what they have said if you like
HERE

Now, Animals.....well they are everywhere! But the catch is....most are nocturnal! so you don't see that many during the day. You may see a wallabies when climbing around where they live & the occasional Wild Horse, not to mention the ubiquitous Kangaroo, though they tent to relax during the day under a shady tree. One thing you can see during the day is BIRDS! We have a big raptor which is the equivalent to America's Golden Eagle, ours is called 'The Wedgetailed Eagle' & it's huge. Snakes are also around in the heat but you rarely see them because they since your vibrations/footsteps & flee, most of the time thank goodness!

So does that mean its dangerous to go out and explore at night by bike and by foot? What about all those deadly critters that are over there? Too hot in some areas for them?

I reckon snakes are the only danger, but they tent to keep to themselves.

Hmmmmm.....I guess Dingoes could gang up on you if they were starving & you were by yourself (?) :dog: (Grey Dingo?!)
