Hey all,

Great forums, lots of sage advice here to be had.

I purchased a two year warranty from my dealership on a 2005 Yamaha vstar, making three years warranty total with the factory warranty.

Typically are there any issues that the warranty covers that crop up in the first three years of a bike's life, given good upkeep?

Cost: ~$350

Each and every machine is a gamble. Most will pull through for you without ever having to need major work, but then again there are the one or two machines out there that have problems.

Don't worry about getting taken. You got the warranty and that's it - make sure you know the terms of the warranty and just ride! $350 is nothing when it comes to a major repair, so you'll be thanking yourself if you ever need it.

ya 350$ sounds cheap to me for a warranty. my first bike i bought used and got the warranty within 6 months i had a problem with the exhaust the repairs would have cost way more than what i paid for the warrenty. usually id say no warranty but some times they pay for themselfs fast other wise its a piece of mind.

I make it a rule never to buy extended warranties. In most cases I think they are a rip off. $350.00 sounds like a good deal though. When buying my Hayabusa, I was offered a lifetime battery replacement and tire road hazzard warranty for $100.00. I bought it because it sounded too good to be true. I've had my bike now for almost 11 months and have had nails in two rear tires. That $100.00 investment has already paid for itself almost 4 times over. The cost to replace a rear tire on that bike is $183.00.

$350 doesn't sound bad. However, I don't do warranties either. Here's my warranty: Sell me a lousy product and/or give me bad service, and not only will I not buy from you again, I'll do my best nobody else does either. I don't think I will ever see why a consumer should pay an added cost to get service that should have been expected in the first place. It's nothing more than a money grab. I've saved thousands of dollars over the years by not submitting to this game. So now, if I bought something and it died after two days, I've already got it covered.

I did the extended warranty/service plan through the dealer. Gives me 3 years and since I'm not very knowledgeable on bike mechanics, yet, it seemed worth it since my service checks over the next 3 years are essentially "free"

I guess only time will tell though if it was truly worth the cost. For the $350 you spent I'd say you did fairly well by it.

I'd definately buy an extended warranty- But I also ride a lot.

$350 for an extra 3 years - Around $117 a year, under $10 a month?

I spend more than $10 a month on junk food.

If you're only going to put 2,000 miles on your bike per season, maybe you didn't need this warranty. If you're going to put 2,000 miles on your bike this month, it's a definite money saver.

Either way, it's a very good price for a warranty, and a warranty is always a good thing to have if you can afford it.

Well, sounds like it wasn't a bad deal in the end then. Not sure how many miles the bike will see..time will tell.

I think we all buy hoping for product reliability but when you have a major problem after the warranty runs out, it's disappointing. The extended warranty you bought is very reasonable considering the high cost of motorcycle parts and labour. Sometimes it's a lottery, but you'll really smile if you make use of it!
