i just bought one of these the other day and there is a dearth of information online about them...
i found a little bit of the specs at bikez.com or bikepics.com i dont remember which one...
i know there werent very many, maybe 1000 or so brought into the states in 83 but no hard fast numbers...
the VIN is JYA35H005DA000679 and has a sport fairing vs. the larger tour fairing that supposedly was retro fitted later in the year...
im going to go though the carbs, do fork seals and oil, final drive oil and engine oil over the winter. i broke my arm in july and its not capable of properly applying the throttle so im just going to give it some lovin' till spring...
were they only available in red with grey and black stripes or were there other color schemes available during the year?
thanks for the help you can provide...

Other than that xjbikes.com will prolly be more help for bike specific queries.
Good luck
and enjoy your tinkering/healing.

I don't know if you still have the XJ900, but I have had one for the last 6 years, and have put about 15,000 miles on it. There were approximately 1600 imported to the US, but it was only an interim bike prior to the introduction of the FJ1100. If it is running right, it will get 55-60+ mpg on road trips. In an original road test by Cycle world, I believe, it did a quarter mile sprint in about 11.88 seconds, not bad for only 853cc.
