Emergency Stopping practice

I've been wanting to practice emergency stopping at high speeds for a couple weeks now, but I'm stumped as to where. The only "safe" spot I can think is one of the larger malls parking lots in the early morning when there are no cars. However, the security guys are still there circling in their truck and I'm sure would kick me out.

I've started doing a lot more long distance riding at highway speeds so swerving/braking at 60/70mph seems like a pretty smart thing to practice before I actually have to do it! Where do you guys do this stuff?

I'm lucky. I have access to an MSF range here on base. I just have to inform the safety office that I'll be out there. It's part of the flight line, so I've got lots of room and lots of freedom to accelerate.

I had to practice that at least twice on my way to work this morning.

Damn cagers on their cell phones.

How about a high school parking lot? I live on a short street but I can still get to 60 mph between the cul-de-sac and my driveway so that's where I practice. Of course, I might stop all that practice because my front tire just got replaced at 5500 miles, and this is a "cruiser".

It may be worth going up to the security office, to ask if 1) they mind you trying emergency stops outside and 2) when would be the best time for you to be doing it.

Maybe they'll say no! but you might be surprised

Personally, I learnt on a weekend in an industrial estate where people only work on weekdays. Find a nice dead end, and go to the far end of it, and turn around. This ensures you won't have anything behind you when you brake, and you only have to worry about what's in front

I practice my swerving/braking on the normal roads. Just find a straight one with NO traffic.

We use a soccer complex parking lot. During the day, there's nothing going on there, except on weekends. The parking area is huge. I agree with niblett, ask. They might like to watch you, and you have a helper if you drop the bike (it can happen). Good luck.

We have at least one Hockey Rink/Comminity Complex in most any town up here, most with big paved parking lots that are empty a good part of the time. Great for pratice/goofing around in. Anything like that where you are?

Ahhh the Classic British Industrial Estate (there not quite the same in North America) I remember those however I do remeber havning to avoid numerous Nissan Micras with L plates
