Tire Pump you can plugin to your wall socket?

#1 Post by Brackstone » Mon Jan 12, 2009 1:30 pm

Anyone have any recommendations on a tire pump that you can plug into your wall? Everywhere I look they only seem to fit the Car Cigarette Adapters.

Don't get me wrong I'm sure it would be handy to have a portable pump but really I'm just looking for something so I can service my bike in my own garage.

Also I want to add in that it's a REAL PITA to try to get any nozzle to fit for my tire because of the placement. So if anyone has any suggestions for that too let me know.

Thanks Guzzi, this seems to be exactly what I was looking for.

This was really frustrating because I googled "Tire Pump" "Electric Tire Pump" "Electric Tire Pump Wall Outlet" etc.

IMHO, a more versatile option would be an "air pig", also known as a portable air tank. They are light and you fill them for free at your local service station.

The air pig will give you the same air power as a full blown compressor until the tank is nearly empty. You can fill a lot of motorcycle and bicycle tires on one tank. The air pig comes with a gauge and hose with tire valve.

I have both an air pig and a good quality compressor, 9 times out of 10 I reach for the pig because its fast and easy. The kids gave me mine for Christmas years ago, so I'm not sure on the price, but I'm sure they are reasonable. I've seen them on Craiglist for 15 to 20 dollars used.

Oh ya, they are great to throw into the trunk as an emergency air supply for your vehicle, too. Mine has saved me a couple of times allowing me to get home instead of having to change the tire out in the backcountry where I run my dog.

Why worry about the plug type?

I figured there would be an adapter but I always have a problem ordering merchandise from names I don't know. I know case logic so maybe that won't be a bad idea.

But whenever I buy something I always try to get some sort of "Brand Name". I get nervous whenever there is an attached warranty to some company I have never heard of.

Thanks for pointing that out story. I'm going over options with the wife because she would like to pump her car tires too occasionally.

Sears or Home Depot has inexpensive air compressors. They're great to have around for filling tires and blowing things off after cleaning.

It's nice having a self-filling "pig" so you don't have to run to a gas station if you run low.

About the "pig". If you want a tire to get to 30 psi then you better have at least 60 psi in your pig. All it can do is equalize.

My "pig" goes up to 125psi.

Its also a function of volume as well, both of the pig tank and the tire, ball, air mattress etc.

My local gas stations only have pay for air stations. Will those fill an air pig? I have no room in the townhouse for a real compressor, though my bike one works fine for most everything.
