Street bikes are down almost 6%, scooters are up almost 42%. No surprise there.

(What I wonder about is the 22% rise in dual sports. Hmmmm).

Well dual sports are the most practical in many parts of the world for their comfort and tank range without sacrificing too much performance. Scooters are the friendly side of biking. Insurance isn't bad either with those bikes unlike the RR bikes.

I switched to a dual sport in 2006 and have never regretted it. In fact, I love it! Has opened up a whole new world of riding opportunities. Plus, I get to ride instead of polish. woohoo!

Where I live in south NJ, near the Pine Barrens, limits on ATV's and real hard-core MX riding become more restrictive every year. But there are miles and miles of public sand roads in the state forests you can chug along on a dual sport, plus you don't need a truck to get you down there and back. Makes sense to me.

What JC said. The fact that many dual sports tend to have a lower price point, are usually amenable to new/novice riders (provided you have the inseam for it) and are very versatile may be helping their sales.

Folks may also find these to be way fun addition to the stable in addition to their normal fire breathing big bore sportbike, tourer or cruiser.

Personally, I would love a a street oriented dual-sport or a supermoto.
Although, some of the European brands are actually quite expensive for what they are, imo.
