Are These Good Products?

#1 Unread post by JDawg117 »

Today I went to the dealership with the best selection of gear in town and tried on a bunch of stuff. I want your input on these products, as I have never heard of some of these brands.

1) Fieldsheer jackets/pants
2) Vega Altura helmets
3) HJC CS-R1 and CS-12 helmets
4) Gmax 48S and 38X helmets
5) River Road Sturgis gloves
6) 6th Gear RG24 gloves

I've heard a lot of good stuff about HJC, but I haven't heard of any of the other brands before. Any input is appreciated.

Fieldsheer and HJC are pretty well known brands, dunno about the rest.

river road is inexpensive stuff - i've got a set of their saddlebags on my bike. i've never heard of 6th gear - heard of first gear - inexpensive but decent.

one thing you don't want to skimp on is safety equipment. that's not saying you need to blow a ton of money on an alpinestars full suit and a shoei or arai helmet. joe rocket, hjc, first gear all make decent quality stuff for reasonable amounts. i'd try everything on to make sure what size you wear, then check out newenough.com or bing.com to see what kind of deals they have. fit, comfort, and safety are more important than price and looks imo.

If I were you I'd stay away from the Sturgis gloves. I looked them up and they have holes right where the knuckle protectors should be. If you go down and your hand gets caught facing palm up, you are gonna lose your knuckles. You will be dragging your bare knuckles across the pavement at speed. Not good.

If you are wanting a good hot weather glove go with something like what I have. They are mesh and have little vents on the fingers to let air in, but the knuckles are covered with a hard knuckle protector. They also have a double layer of leather on the palm which will help keep pavement from your skin.

I have black First Gear Mesh Sport gloves. I think they have been revamped since I bought mine and now they are called mesh sport 2.0 and the knuckle protectors look different and the little finger vents are no longer on them, but look around and you can find many different cheap mesh gloves that will protect you, not be too hot, and will not look out of place on a cruiser, if thats what you ride....you will find one you like that meets your criteria.

Here's a link to what mine look like. I didn't buy them at this link, I bought them thru Motorcycle Superstore but this is the only link I can find with a pic of these gloves. Motorcycle Superstore now only has the mesh sport 2.0. I like mine except that I had a seam start to come undone on the back of one finger that I had to repair. They are good but not perfect. For that you hafta buy the high dollar gloves. They aren't as good as the top of the line stuff but I have been down in them and they did their job and are still in really good shape. Just a few scratches.

Things to look for in a warm weather glove would be vents, double layer leather at the butt of the palm, and good knuckle protection... oh and you want some that are snug...maybe with a wrist strap you can tighten so they won't come off if you put your hand down while crashing. Some gloves even fasten the pinky finger to the ring finger so your pinky won't get bent backward and snap or something.

Good luck in your search

I have a Fieldsheer jacket and it is super. The liner comes comes out adding to the versatility. It has reflective piping and great protective features. I got a good deal on it but I would've paid full price. I have an HJC helmet and it's excellent. I went with full face protection all the way. Make sure you get an expert to check the helmet fit. Have fun shopping!

The HJC CS-12 helmet does not have a removable liner. Its a decent lower end helmet but the liner gets a little seedy after awhile unless you wear a skull cap and needs a good washing in my opinion.

I have a Gmax GM58S and love it. It's a very light and comfortable helmet. It's also Snell approved.

Gmax makes some very comfy helmets that I can wear all day and not get a headache (like I do with my HJC helmet).

My helmet isn't much different than the one you mentioned from Gmax. Maybe check out the 58S

Thanks for all the help, guys. I just bought a Joe Rocket jacket, Icon's Hooligan 2 gloves, and HJC's CS-R1 helmet. I'll have pics up sooner or later.
