PA license/permit laws?

#1 Unread post by i m m y »

Do you need a Class-C(car) license to apply for your motorcycle permit in PA or can you have just a permit? I get my car license in about a month and I was wondering what the quickest way was to get my motorcycle license. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Best bet is to contact the state MVA - they probably have a web page. I know that in MD, things are different if you've never had a driver's license and want to get your M . . .

If you're a PA resident, the BRC is FREE!! And I THINK that if you pass the class, you don't need to take the license waiver test... Again, contact your local MVA office.

I don't believe you need a Class C to apply for a motorcycle learner's permit. One restriction is that "if you do not currently hold another Class of License (such as a Class C) than you can only operate a motorcycle under the instruction and immediate supervision of a licensed motorcycle operator." Here's the information:

http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/faq/faq-mcpermit.shtml

Personally, though, I would very much recommend against trying to learn to ride a motorcycle if you're not already a reasonably proficient driver. I'd been driving for 35 years when I began motorcycling and still found it mental overload for the first few months.

Now both the BRC and the ERC substitute for taking the skills test at the DMV. There is a bill in the state senate which might end state provision of the safety courses.
