85 Yamaha Virago 750 Good First Bike?

I was looking at getting a 85 Yamaha Virago 750. I was wondering if this is a good starter bike? Here are the details of the one I'm currently looking at.

Virago 750 with 10,000 miles - $950
-Clear Title
-All Original
-Runs Good
-New Tires with 600 miles on them
-Needs Mirrors
-All Lights Work
-Mechanical Sound
-Chrome in Good Shape
-Paint in Good Shape
-Historic Tags
-One small dent on Tank
-Sitting for 3-4 months in storage unit


The reason the guy told me he was selling it was because he bought this for his wife to get her used to riding a motorcycle. He's been keeping in a storage unit, because he doesn't have space and wants to make a quick sale. He bought another bike, and wants to maintain one.

Do people think this bike sounds like a good deal The bike seems like a great deal! (I haven't physically seen it yet!) Is this bike is too old for a beginner? Should I be looking for something newer? Could I find mirrors to fit this easily? Would it be hard to find parts for this? Would this handle well and be comfortable for a newer rider?

Don't really know if it is a good deal or not. But my best friend has one and really loves it. Sorry, he won't part with it !!

Check the link for BikeBandit along the bottom of the page for parts. They have a pretty extensive schematics library for finding exactly what you need or you can search by bike and see everything that'll fit it narrowed down by category.

As far as it being too old for a beginner, I think as long as you're not overly adverse to turning a few wrenches it'd be just fine. There's bound to be little idiosyncrosies that pop up on any bike, and the older ones always seem to have more of them. Granted, 85 isn't horribly old by any means, but my 85 Madura seems to have small issues that make it less fun to ride on a regular basis.

I live in Vermont and I just bought a 1995 Virago 750 with 20,000 miles on it. It is my second bike, up from a 1981 Honda 400. The roads here are a bit rough and I wanted a bigger, heavier and more stable bike that I felt held the road better. I also was tired of monkeying with chain drives. A motorcycle mechanic friend recommended I check out Virago 750s. He was right. I love it. It handles well, has enough power for me, is comfortable, and is great on the highway. I cannot comment on the price you are paying or if it is a good deal. I paid lots more for my 1995. But if the 1985 models are like the 1995 one I purchased you should be happy.
