Helmet?

I checked all over this forum, but I have no idea how to tell if a helmet is good (aside from DOT/Snell[iffy] rating on back). Is there any specific brand that is sought after or are they all generally okay?

My dad suggested a Shoei helmet, and it fit snugly, had the dot rating, etc...but I wanted to double check.

i think pretty much all major helmets brands are fine just go with what fits best. theres no particular one that is safer than the rest from what ive herd. its all about fit as long as it has the dot/snell stickers.

i know alot of people that have been importing helmets that are not dot certified. seems in europe they are making the helmets alot lighter and still as safe i forget the brand though...

ive had icon and shoei and i prefere the icon. its cheaper and has better vents and over all quality is better i think.

i have an $80 bell helmet...it does the job.

The good helmet is depend on couple things, such as, comfort, your budget, your style of helment and feature.

Brand name trend to be more expensive than other like Shoei, Arai but they have a lot of features that other helments might not have, such as best material, light weight, less pulling head at hight speed, fog prevention system.

Less pricy helmet aren't that bad either some have same features some less,

Cheapo one is also not bad (better than no helmet LOL).

So for you, I think you should try alot of helmets and see which one fit you the best, different brand give you different fit. You head might not like Shoei but like cheaper one like HJC better, who knows?

I just recently baught my first helmet, and i tried on about half dozen to get an idea of fitting and whatnot. I tried everything from a $99 Zeus, to $1300 Shoie. I found a place selling Shark helmets, which are really great (fiberglass, nice lining material, etc) for 1/3 price on sale, Reg 599, going for 199. I wish so badly that I could've gotton one, but the medium was way too big, and the small ripped my ears off.

I got a HJC CL-14 in the end, medium price, nice quality, DOT and Snell rated.

This is all to say that fit is the only thing to really go by after the safety ratings, no matter how pricey or flashy, you'll be happier with a good helmet than a fancy one.

I like my $85 HJC cs10 alot. I agree, fit is the real issue.

Yep, fit is what's important. I tried them all... from Shoei for $1000 + to much cheaper brands. Turns out Arai and Shoei don't suit my head (thank God) and Zeus was a perfect fit, only 100 bucks. SOLD! Love havin' a cheap head!

Print this out and take it with you... the BEST helmet is one that is DOT approved, minimum, Snell is supposed to be a higher level of protection (tougher tests), AND THAT FITS RIGHT.

If it doesn't fit well, it cannot protect your brain.

Full face provides the greatest protection - most head impacts seem to be to the lower face/jaw area.

I really love my Schuberth C2

It's not cheap, but then neither is my skull.

It is very quiet and well ventilated. And it has a built in sun visor.

one thing you should consider is not the price or the brand but the comfort your helmet gives you. the most important role of it is to protect you from the hazards of the street!
