Squashed nut

#1 Unread post by guitarguy1 »

Hey guys,
I got my hands on a 1983 Honda FT500 and i have a problem I need some help with.

I've taken the bike down to the frame to repaint, replace, and rebuild along with cleaning the rust off of the bike. Unfortunatly one of the nuts has been squashed and sanded down smooth. My best guess is that someone had to slide on it. None of the sockets on my wrench will fit over it, nor would they be able to grip it if they could. It's been formed into an egg shaped chunk. And so I'm stuck.

Any thoughts on how to get it off? Or will I need to take my torch to it and chop it off and try to get the shaft out?

Any help is greatly appreciated

First make sure it is actually a nut and can be removed. Second, vice grips are you friend.
Always ask why.

Get one of those rounded head tools at Sears. They work for Bob Vila.

If it's a bolt head, you could try cutting a slot in it with something like a dremel tool. Then use an impact driver with a tight fitting bit.

I would recommend saturating whatever it is with WD40 before you do attempt to break it free, seems to work miracles on seized up bolts.

Couldnt you also drill a hole in the middle of the nut and then use an easy out?
