Auto tire on rear spoked rim

#1 Unread post by flw »

There is a rider on another forum that is using a auto radial tire with a internal tube (spoke rim) on the rear of his bike. (Kawasaki Vulcan 500 LTD/EN500C) .

Has anyone tried this and if so what was your experience?

I'm going to need new tires in the next month or sooner and would like to get a tire that don't dry rot as quickly as bike tires seem to. I'll keep to a bike tire up front. My tires only lasted 3 years/12K miles and I have cracks through out the tread of both tires. I also store by bike inside the garage and cover it over the winter.

Thoughts on a rear auto tire with tube?

lots of sites out there talking about going to the dark side. Personally I go through at least one set of tires a year if not two so the wearing out isn't an issue, but I've ridden a few bikes with a car tire in the back. There is a noticeable fight on turn in then an appreciable drop as you make it over the turn. The big bikes notice it less but even on my XS850 it fought just to get into the turn. Granted I did it before I hooked the sidecar back up and it makes perfect sense on a sidecar rig.

I dunno how much luck youd have with a car tire on our bikes rear wheel. good quality rear tire should last you long enough.

You only ride 4K miles a year and you are worried about longevity of the tires?

Unless it is exposed to extreme conditions or it is defective, no way a good modern motorcycle tire should dry crack in only three short years.
