Well, I wanted to introduce myself, I guess. I just finished 5 years with the Marine Corps on Friday. I'll be going to school in the fall to get my Associates Degree in Automotive Technology. I am married with our first child on the way and I'm looking to get a cheap 250 cruiser to putz around on and use for my commute to school. I am absolutely not a thrill-seeker, I think sport bikes are boring and cliche (no offense AT ALL, it's just that after watching idiot Marines kill themselves on GSXR's every other day for 5 years, I just don't have any taste for them. Just my .02) I really love fabrication and custom work. I'm a "non-professional" welder and tinkerer in my spare time so I would have a lot of fun messing around with a cheap little 250. I'm still on the market and haven't made up my mind yet, nor have I found any really great deals. If anybody down in the San Diego or Bakersfield area knows of any good salvage yards or even any bikes for sale around the $500 range, I could probably convince my wife to let me get one right now. Hahaha. Anyway, I look forward to getting to know all of you and hopefully riding with a few of you some time soon. Take care!

Welcome to the community!
First, congratulations on your first child!
I can understand where you are coming from and for the desire for a 250cc inexpensive bike. There are some good ones out there you can grab for cheap, but I would go for a Honda Rebel 250 if you can:
Honda has make them for a very long time and you should be able to find one cheap, maybe not $500, but under $1000 anyways.

The other bike I would suggest is a Suzuki Savage 650 (also called the Boulevard S40)

It's a 650cc, but a single cylinder so it's more like a 400cc in power. Suzuki has been making them since...1985/6.

Most of all, no matter what you get, you'll have fun out there! And we will be here happy to answer your questions as well for a very long time,
Merry Christmas!

Congrats on wrapping up your Marine life and settling down with the soon-to-be new family!
Any more thoughts on what kind of bike you're thinking of getting?
