How to wheelie??

Hi, I am new to this site, and a new biker.

A month ago, i bought a brand new cbr600rr with the tribal paint scheme. I love it so much. But when u have a bike like that, ppl that see me always make that hand motion, ya know the one that signals they want a wheelie. I get fustrated for one, i dont want to make one, and for two, i dont know how to make one. In my mind, why be a sportbike rider if you cant at least do a wheelie! I dont want to do stunts, but at least wheelie! NOw I have read some stuff about it and got a few opinions. But anyone here that can help me out and elaborate the steps for me to do a safe wheelie? I bet this has been covered before, but i dont feel like goin through 20 pages to see the answer.

I believe I have read a girl died becuz of wheelie action in California. This is happened in sport bike class especially for wheelie /stunt kind of thing.

Do yourself a favour, get on a dirt bike or trials bike and learn to wheelie, you sound like an accident waiting to happen.

I would definitely learn first on a dirt bike that you wouldn't care to tip over. Not saying you would, but with a new bike like yours I wouldn't chance scratching it until you feel comfortable with what your doing. It will also feel a little different on a sport bike than a dirt bike, weight-wise, feeling and handling, etc., which should be taken into account. I wish I could tell you how to wheelie, but I don't know how to put it into words. Although there are a bunch of guys here that will soon tell you. Just my

I agree with the two above me regarding learning to do a wheelie on an expendable dirtbike before attempting this trick on your pride and joy.

I can tell you that the first rule in safe wheelies is to always land the front wheel ahead of the rear wheel.

Ride your bike your way. If and when your ready to lift the front wheel, you will. The more familar with your bike and what it can do you are, the easier it will be. And the better prepared you will be for it. Attempting a manouver your not ready to attempt is a sure way to ruin your day and your bike.

If you really MUST learn to wheelie this week, get a dirtbike. And all the offroad gear that goes with it. And wear it. You will be hitting the ground, count on it.

Riding a sportbike (even though mine's a BMW) I regularly get 'do a wheelie' from idiot passer's by. My standard response has become "Are you always a jacka$$ or only on fill in the blankdays?" (Tuesday, Wednesday, etc) Even if I just say it in my helmet.

Isn't this contradictory? Don't let others pressure you into doing something you don't want to do!

Out of curiousity, what is the wheelie sign? I've never heard of this.

take your hand and hold it out with the palm facing down, parrallel to the ground. Bend your wirst so your hand goes up keeping your arm level. That is the wheelie sign I get.

As for having a sportsbike and thinking you need to do a wheelie - that is in your own brain. Sportsbikes are the copies of the bikes on the track. They are not "made" to do wheelies, they are made to go fast around corners and fast in the straight aways. Wheelies, and espically extended length wheelies starve the engine of oil. It all runs to the tranny section and the crank starves. "On the street" wheelies (especially with out previous training) are wreckless.

People will do wheelies on the streets, but I think the ideas by previous posters of learning on the dirt and then turning it to the street later is the best idea. I've done accidental front wheel lifts, but never a wheelie. Guys who ride my bike call it a "wheelie machine" and think it is a waste to not use it that way. I disagree. My bike goes rocket fast, cuts the curves, and is comfortable on a long ride. That makes me happy.

In the end you have to do what is safe for you and what you think is best. I hope what you think is best isn't impressing other people on your bike.
