Tire choice !

Hi folks !

I need some input/advice/opinion !

I am at the end of life of my stock tires for the Versys 1000 with about 8 000 km done on them.

I am looking at replacement tires and I thought of the Metzeler Z8 and the Pilot Road 4.

My choice is almost set on the PR4 now, but I am wondering if I should go with the GT or the regular ones. Michelin advices the regular ones.

The BMW R1200RT comes with PR4 GT, and weighs 259kg (wet), w/o paniers.
The Versys weighs 239kg (wet) according to the most trusted motorcycle website ( ), also without paniers. I also happen to have two large paniers and a top case.

With so little weight difference, should I stick with the regular PR4s or should I go to the GT spec ?

*** Both tire type are the same size and fits on my bike (120/70ZR17 - 180/55ZR17 ) ***

Thanks for your input ! I want a good tire that'll last a while on highway but will also feel great when having some fun in the twisties, and feel secure !

I am also looking at PR4s for when I need some new tires and I am interested in what others think. The GT version is constructed with a heavier sidewall for heavy bikes with heavy loads so I would probably go with the regular PR4s. If you are going to change your own tires, then I have also heard that the GT variant is harder to install. If you are going to do a lot of touring with heavy loads or two up, then the GT might be an option, otherwise I would be inclined to stick with the normal version of the PR4s.

A lot of motorcyclists in the LD community have been using the Road Pilot line of tires for a long time with good results which is why I am looking at that option.

Avons are another great choice...

Avon Storm tires are long wearing, high mileage sport-touring tires that offer excellent grip in both wet and dry weather. The large sipes (water channels) provide more grip in wet weather than the slicker VP2 Sport, and still provide plenty of grip in dry weather for sporty touring or the occasional track day.

The pilot roads are a slam dunk IMO they are sticky enough but hardy as well. The previous PR tires were also good in cooler weather as well. I am just finishing up a set of Conty tires that were not that great but on sale and I was in a pinch but I am going pilots on my next set.

I got a set of Z8s and I'm quite happy with them so far. You might also consider Pirelli Angel GTs, lots of good reviews out there. I'd like to try those next.

I have not heard anything nad on the Angels quite a few of the group i ride with use and like them a lot just my $ .02 on them

I have finally decided for the PR4 (not GT).

Angel ST were not available and the Z8 was better rated and about 50$ cheaper only.

It'll be nice to have a bike handling great again !
