82 yamaha xj550 stalling

#1 Unread post by jbob286 »

Hey all, I let my bike sit for 10 days or so and had a hell of a time starting it which is normal for my bike when it has sat for a while. It probably needs a tuneup. Anyways the bike stalls everytime once I let off the gas or put the clutch in for longer than a second. It doesn't idle or struggle to keep running the rpms just drop at a constant speed until the engine dies. This happens even after the engine has warmed up properly. Could be that the idle speed adjustment got messed up? Should I try a tuneup, replacing the spark plugs I know haven't been done in a while. Carbs were synched and I believed cleaned before the bike was sold to me a month or so ago.

Alot of old yamahas seem to have the startup problem. If the bike has been sitting, out the petcok in the PRI position to let the carbs fill up w/ fuel foe about 10 seconds

Your running problem sounds like it's a clogged idle circuit - very good possibility that crud has collected in the passages under the idle mix screws. This is difficult to clean. requres a soak and compressed air usually.

If you try to cleean yourself, be very careful. The idle mix screws strip easily, and afaik they are unobtanium.
