Motorcycle makes me smell like exhaust

#1 Unread post by jacksonc »

I have an 1982 honda 250 custom, it has pipes on both sides of the bike, they end at the rear axle. It has had a full tune up with plugs, carb cleaning and valve clearance etc. After I ride it I smell like engine exhaust. Its not a problem for a short trip like just over to my frineds house or work and back. But if I go for a ride for 15 minutes or so, or do a lot of errends sometimes I have to change my clothes. Anybody else have this problem or know anyway to cut down on it ?

Hmmm...

I don't understand, does the bike smoke?

Are you standing behind it for any length of time while it's running?

Do you always ride with a strong tail wind?

Or maybe there is an exhaust leak up front somewhere that's stinkin' up your clothes???

Nope I don't spend a lot of time next to it while its stoped. There are always winds in Nebraska, but its only at your back sometimes. Its just a smell like what you get from a lawn mower, or an old beater truck. I leaned it out some with the pilot screw and it didn't seem to help. I don't think the pipes leak it is pretty quiet and it puffs out the pea shooter hole in the baffle really well. I'll have to check them better I guess.

Is it exhaust or fuel smell?

Maybe your tank has small hole in it or one of the carb vents is leaking (might need float valve and needle).

Can I assume the exhaust isn't leaking ?

it is what it is.they aint like cars with tomato juice cans to catch the gas vapors--no catalytic converters.stand behind any old car before they had all that stuff and they smell the same way.

Yes for sure we all smell like exhaust, whether it's coming from your own exhaust pipe or other cagers. Try standing in a room of smokers and see how you turn out.
