Time vs distance

#1 Unread post by Posthumane »

Hey all,
I bought my suzuki sometime in early august (don't remember the exact date), and have since put over 4000km on it. Is this excessive? I know alot of people who don't even put that much on their car. How much do you guys ride on average per month?

I've been riding back and forth from medicine hat to calgary every weekend, which is about 300km on way, so that's where most of the kms come from, and I've ridden in all kinds of weather form warm sunshine to near freezing nighttime, and even a slight sprinkle of snow just before medicine hat last weekend.

Excessive? Why do you ask? I've put 6600 miles on my new bike in under 5 months.

So long as you're paying attention to the basics: oil level, brakes, etc. you should be fine.

Oh, 10,000 miles in the past 12 months...even with 2 1/2 months of winter, and reduced mileage for gas prices (i ride for fun, only, and have to cut back when it gets expensive.) No, I don't think yours is excessive...ask whitegryphon about it.

I managed over 10,000 miles in one year on my Meanie. I bought her on July 31st of 2004 and she's pushin' 12,000 miles right now.

I bought my truck on June 8th and have managed to put over 8500 on it so far.

I've ridden 335,000 miles over the past 21 years or a little under 16,000 miles per year average. Living here in NE Ohio where winter cuts back the riding; I usually average about 1000 miles total for Dec,Jan,and Feb and for May thru Oct depending on the weather, I generally ride 2-3,000 miles per month.

Your 4000 km or 2500 miles in a month and a half or so is not excessive in my opinion, it's just almost enough
407,211 miles in 30.1 years for 13,528 miles/year average. Started 7/21/84, updated 8/26/14

thanks for the vote of confidence Ron.

No, 4000km in a month and a half is not excessive.

I put 16000km on my Suzuki last year before winter finally showed up.
Put another 7000km on it between the middle of April and the middle of June this year, then traded it in for a new KLR650.

Put 1000km on it the first five days, and have slowly wracked up another 6000km since then.

I've really been slacking off on my riding this year due to too much rain and less available money to go riding (gotta make those monthly payments after all)

Cool. The reason I brought it up is that when I bought the bike, it had less than 38000km on it, in the 26 years it was around, and here I've put more than 10% of that on in about a month. I was just wondering about the longevity of the bike, as I don't want to wear it out right away. Plus I was curious about how much other people ride.

The riding season here is rather short as well, like I said, we've already had a sprinkle of snow in some parts of alberta. It's getting too cold for me to be out on the highway for long periods of time, esp. since I don't have good insulated pants (long underwear + jeans + rainpants does the trick most of the time).
