Extended Warranty

Anyone go for extended warranties?

I usually don't buy into them if you know what I mean- You pay the money the time passes and nothing happens.

I have a little more time before I need to put up the $400 for an extended warranty on a Yami 04 vstar 1100.

I don't plan on many miles per year at this point - maybe 2k. The warranty is good for four more years. Same as what is covered in 1yr warranty - just four more.

Has anyone bought and not used it? Has anyone bought and was soooo.. glad they did?

Right now I don't think I am going to do it. Would rather spend the $400 on the bike or a trip on the bike

Any thoughts?

When I bought my bike it came with YES(Yamaha extended service) 4 year warranty, I have not used but I thought it was a good deal, especially since it doesn't have a deductible.

the price is pretty cheape when you counsider what shop rate is,

price out a small repair and then add up labour and parts, bet you it comes to around $400, now how about a blown engine a little more than $400.

It's a small price to pay for a secure feeling that if something major does happen, that you don't end up with a real expensive rolling paperweight cuz you can't afford to fix it.

I bought one through the dealership for 3 years I believe. It covers my routine maintenance during those 3 years as well as anything malfunctioning. Seeing as how I don't know that much about motorcycle mechanics yet I thought it was a good deal. If you're more mechanically inclined though, you could probably get by without one and not have any major problems.

I bought into an extended warranty on a car and never needed it.

If the manufacturer is prepared to give such a long extended warranty then they must feel their product is reliable.

I should buy extended warranty on toasters though. Toasters seem to last me a year and a day.

I never buy extendend warranties on anything. If one is offered, chances are pretty good that you won't need it. Otherwise, there'd be no profit in selling them. An old friend that owned a bike shop told me that extended warranties were his number two profit center. Maintenance was first and profit on new bikes was third.

If you can't fix anything yourself go ahead and buy it. If you're handy with a toolbox, on the other hand, you should be able to tackle anything that arises. I doubt you'll be contending with any major engine or transmission failures in the next four years.

Extended warranties are like any other insurance policy. 9 people out of 10 won't need it, but that 10th guy that needs it and doesn't have it is going to be p!ssed! In considering buying an extended warranty I try to look at the price of total replacement for the item, cost of the policy over time, etc.

Zoo, that's a good point. If you can't fix anything yourself, there may be more of an incentive to go for the warranty. Personally, I want to keep my bike away from a dealer's shop if it's at all possible. Seems like whenever they fix something, some other thing starts having problems.

It ran about 50/50 for all the replies I had gotten from this and other forums.

I am not going for it. I am confident I can do some wrenching i.e. valves, oil, modifications etc.

Obviously not going to do major stuff - taking a calculated risk the big stuff ain't gonna happen.

Based on other vstar owners not much has gone wrong - starter bolts not withstanding on pre 04.
