General Update and also Mixture Q

#1 Unread post by Henriettaah »

Well, I think the LC is just about ready for its MOT. The brake, indicator and headlight wiring has been sorted out; and a flasher relay put in. Initially it was thought that the neutral and oil switches were mixed up in the wiring, as the oil light came on when the bike was in neutral, and the neutral light didn't come on. But: I now know the oil light is designed to do this as a test - obviously then it stays on in gear if there is low oil. Further investigation into the neutral showed... no bulb! So that is all sorted now. Also some old wires behind the headlamp had become stiff, and broken - easily fixed. A speedo cable has been put on. I found a chain guard for a mark I which has been adapted and fixed on. I got a lovely pair of chrome mirrors with, oddly, two left hand threads - a thread adaptor was found for the left hand side, only there are no locking nuts for the mirrors - and left hand thread ones have proved difficult to find! However, I have been experimenting with silicon (not enough friction) and some kind of glue to try and keep the darned things in the right place..! - Don't want to use threadlock, as that just seems too permanent.
Got some silver bar ends, dust caps  and a nice chrome tax disc holder (no disc to put in it yet!).

All thats left is/was the fuel/oil mix. And the bike would start, run for a few minutes, then putt out if the revs were allowed to die. So the spark plug was cleaned, and the revs turned up a little. So far so good - except it has far too much oil in it (absolutely up to the top of the view glass). There is a max and min mark and its waaaaay over the max.

Question: if there is too much oil in here, bearing in mind it is transmission oil - will this make any difference to the oil chucked out the exhaust? It doesn't get burned in the engine, does it??

Although it is[i/] a two-stroke, and it is going to be smokier than most anyway, general feeling is that its pretty smokey. If running in the garage, after a couple of minutes the smoke starts spewing out over the top of the garage door..! (an up-and-over door.)

Does turning the fuel up on the carb make a difference to this? As it is auto-lube, after all - am I making much sense?

Meaning, Surely autolube means that the higher the revs, the more auto-lube is pumped into the fuel.

So by turning the throttle stop screw, won't this just increase the autolube accordingly..? Or not. Does the autolube pump kick in when the revs go above so many 000's rpm.

The spark plug was oiled up. Any ideas why a two-stroker might run with too much oil - and this can only be 2stroke autolube oil, right? :? (It has allegedly had new bearings fitted; I appreciate that worn seals will cause oil to leak and be lost that way)

when it is idling and starts smoking wind it up when it gets warm it will stop smoking.had a rd400 and had to wear a gas mask when it was cold.
the oil injection works when you are cranking it.if it takes a while for fuel to enter cylinder oil is going in before gas and getting on plug.it will burn off when you ride it.the o-n-l-y thing that will make a rd smoke too much is incorrect fuel and oil mix.no other oil can get in there.all 2 strokes will build up oil in the crankcase from the fuel mix some have a drain plug in the crankcase the rd 350--and 400 didnt have a plug.after you get it back running take it for a ride and get on it hard in first gear a couple of times and see if there is a big cloud of smoke behind you.the return spring in the injection pump broke on my 400 and was getting full throttle oil all the time.killed every mosquito within 5 miles of here that year.

Do you suggest that I ask my reliable biker neighbour to take her for a run 'round the block' to check this out? (I can't yet as haven't done any training!)

you can warm it up in the yard by letting it run at a fast rpm (2500--3500)
the smoke should start clearing up when it warms up.

i am hesitant to let anybody ride my bike after a friend of mine dropped mine in my driveway--he had 35 years experience.

Did my first oil change tonight... tra-la-laa... no big deal, I know. Had to take the Allspeed exhaust off though to get at the plug!

Put a new spark plug in and started it up, left it to run for a little while to warm up - at first the smoke was blue, then white as it was warmer.

MOT on Thursday :|

what is happening inside the LC'S exhaust system is the oil that is mixed with the gas is not getting completely burned and is inside the muffler.when you take it for a ride it will get hot enough to burn it all out until you crank it again after it cools off.it is just something you have to expect on a 2 stroke engine.

If the weather is dry tomorrow, she's going to be taken round the block for a spin to see if everything is ok for the MOT. Also there will be a short ride across to the testing garage, so that should warm up the engine nicely. I'm just concerned about failing the emissions test.

The bike passed fine! And yep, once it is warmed up, the smoking is practically nothing - especially compared to when it starts up.

Its been taken out for a couple of very short spins round the block - at first, there were some compression problems, which turned out to be my error - I'd used the wrong spark plug

It still sounds a 'bit flat' somewhere apparently. I took the carb off today and it was cleaned out. Tomorrow we're going to look at the reed valves in case they are a bit gunked up seeing as its been stood for months.

My neighbour who took it out came back grinning on the second trip, saying it was bl**dy nippy - and thats before its been properly sorted! :) She rides a GSXR600 and this little 2stroke 125 made her grin with its zip at 6/7k. She reckons I'm going to have some fun with this one :)

great news concerning the Lc. it should get better with more use.
be extremely cautious about any carburetor jet and needle adjustments.
everybody that has ever done much 2 stroke tuning by the seat of the pants has a piston with a hole in it to use as an ashtray.
