After 2 days of disscussion and debating and some yelling ive finally gotten the ok from my parents to get a motorcyle. Ive found the bike im going to buy and i start my MSF on Nov 12. The one thing i havent got a clue on is insurance. I know gieco and progressive offer bike insurance, but gieco was kinda pricy compared to progressive, and was just wondering what some of you guys use. Also, both companies asked me if i will be carrying a sr22 form when i ride, what is that?

If you dont know what an SR22 is be thankful. Also means you probably dont need one.

Its a form that basically means you MUST have insurance coverage to simply keep your license. To get one slapped on you usually requires numerous accidents/tickets in a short span or a ticket for not having insurance

Many of the large car insurance companies also insure bikes. If your parents currently have you on a family policy, ask the agent if they insure motorcycles. If not, ask your current agent. Either way, multiple vehicle discounts can save you some cash overall. Also consider whether you're going to insure it year-round or for 6 months, etc. Ask about different length policies. Here in the frigid Lake Erie area, most people only insure their bikes for 6 months since that's when they get ridden.

MetLife wanted to charge me $110 a year for a bike that cost roughly $4,500 new. Decent coverage too, more than mandatory. Best bet is to call up the insurance people directly and talk to them.

In LA I would guess he would stay insured year round.

Consider yourself lucky, you live in a place where you can easily ride all year.

ride all year, sure, easily, well not at first. Area of LA i live in (Pasadena) i super hilly and kind of a pain to ride in. The whole darn town is on id say a 35-45 degree slant. Made it darn near impossible to learn manual, then a bike in this area, but at least i feel comfident on hills now, or at least semi confident.

Still you learned pretty quick how to negotiate hills. People in flatter areas may not learn this for awhile

ya, and when they do learn it, ill be able to laugh as they drop their bike, cause it will be their first hill and their 10 years of flat riding makes it easy for them to conqur. My school is on a hill, riding home i droped the bike in front of all my friends, and took "poo poo" for it for a week, so i always secertly giggle when people drop their bikes at a hill, especially if they got like an uber bike and cant even get it going

ive been practicing and borrowing a friends 99 ninja 250. In 2 weeks ill be buying a 01 KLR650, man these two weeks im gonna fail tests and ruin my semester grades, cant stop thinking about getting my own bike, got me all jacked up
