Dualsport tour thru BC, YT, NWT, shops/tire availability?

#1 Unread post by Thumpin'650 »

Greetings!

Myself and 2 other riders from the states, all on Honda xr650's, will be traveling from Idaho to Inuvik, NWT this summer. I am thinking we will need to do a tire change somewhere around Whitehorse/Dawson. I am wondering if there are any shops in those towns where we can get tires, and maybe even do a little maintenance on our own bikes?

My other option is to ship a change of tires from the US to Dawson via Canadapost general delivery. We could them claim them at the Post Office and install ourselves before traveling the Dempster Hwy.

OR, if anyone on this forum happens to live along our path and could offer some garage time, and would be willing to recieve tires and hold for our arrival. I assure you we would be grateful, short term guests!

Lastly, any advice for motorcycle touring this part of the world? Besides watching for bears/wildlife and sleeping motorists?

Thanks

ThumpR

Whitehorse will have bike shops as well as tires. While they might not let you use their space to do your own work, I'm sure you could probably find something that will work out for you.

If you were going to be coming through Central Alberta, I would be happy to meet up with you for coffee or maybe join you for a brief portion of your ride.

Prince George in NE BC, which you will have to pass through will also have several bike shops.

Same goes for me, Whyte and I live in the same basic area :D
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

You may be interested in the following guidebook which is great for the BC section of the tour.
