Handle bar problems??????

Hi guys ....I'm new on the block!!!

I have just recently acquired a 500es ninja with low handle bars. I need to remove the handle bars and install higher bars to get a more upright seating possition. The reason is ...I have a screwed up neck with herniated and fused and plated discs. I can't tilt my head upward any because of this. So instead of giving up this free bike!! I an looking for a more upright seating position similar to a dual sport bike if posible.....nuts I know but if possible I can still enjoy the bike. I really would like to be able to ride it this summer. At the moment it has the style of handle bars that are in two pieces and are bolted to the top fork support which doesn't allow for simple swapping of the bars. Is this a possibility????? I got the bike for free so I'm really interested in using it, it is in mint shape with about 1000 KMs on it, 1998 vintage.
Any help would be really appreciated....
