Working on the ol' XR

#1 Unread post by Ninja Geoff »

So, first of all, can someone tell me what's missing from this picture, the dang thing won't start! Image

So, as of now, the rear wheel is off, the rear brake assembly is apart, the gas tank is off, the carburator is off, and i need to get the front wheel off.

The gas tank is unfourtunatly full of rotten fuel, which is why the damn thing wouldn't start.

So, after a good hour wrestling that carb out of there (damn airbox REFUSES to come out :x ) i was able to start tearing it down. And i get it apart, and what happens? That's right, fuel, all over my pants and sweatshirt. Hey, at least the grease got cleaned off in some spots there . I used the sand paper to break up some of the dirt and grease that was really stuck on to the outside of the carb, followed by a good soaking of carb cleaner.

This bike doesn't like to stop. Mainly cause the brakes don't work for "poo poo", so now's a good time to pop those wheels off and clean out the brake hubs. So, i get the wheel off, hub apart, and what do i find. The damn cam that pushes the shoes apart which in turn pushes them against the inside of the hub which stops the rear wheel from spinning is locked up. That took a good 15 mins just to get it to spin, but still not without effort. Also, i noticed little itty bitty chunks missing from the shoes. Also, the little springs are half rusted so i guess that's two things i need to order. Also, the extreme amount of grease and grim on the hub is kinda hard to see, but it's there, my hands were completely black when i got fed up with it.

So at this point I'm just waiting for my gasket kit to get here for the carb, along with a few other goodies (ie gold chain, manual, etc) and i still need to order new brake shoes for the front and back wheel. So far this has been an awsome experiance (if not frusterating ) and I'm really enjoying myself, despite how freaking cold it is in the barn. But hey, it's all for love.
