Help with bleeding my brakes

#1 Unread post by storysunfolding »

I read how to do it this way online... maybe I did it wrong? I had previously replaced the seals in the caliper so it was starting fresh

I hook up a bleed kit to the caliper
I took the top off the master cylinder
I pumped the handle
I opened the bleed nipple
I pumped until no more air bubbles came out while keeping fluid in the master cylinder.
I held the handle pumped as I closed the bleed valve
Then I put the cover back on the master cylinder.

What did I do wrong because she's still all spongy

Attach the hose to the bleeder nipple. Try to pull the brake lever back, while opening the bleeder. Before releasing the brake lever, re-tighten the bleeder. Then release the brake lever. Repeat the last few steps until the old brake fluid is out and the lever isn't spongy.

What was happening in your approach was air was getting pulled back into the system by not re-tightening the bleeder. You can solve that using the method I described or getting some Speed Bleeders, which are fancy bleeders with a one-way check valve in them.

Don't forgot to NOT let the fluid level in the master cylinder drop too far, or you'll have to start over. That should about cover it.

Ok. I'll give it a go and let you know how it turned out. Can't wait to take the 650 back on the road. Had to deal with a wiring problem limiting it to two cylinders and the spongy brakes.

Fixed the wiring problems and patted myself on the back because she started in 2 seconds from a dead cold with no choke (cold day out today) but then I couldn't take her out for a ride!
