KBR Afghanistan job offer

#1 Unread post by rubthebuddha »

I just got offered a job to work in Afghanistan on a one year contract with KBR. The pay is $80,000/year starting BUT they say you work 12 hrs. a day / 7 days a week. Every four months you get 10 days off.

I've been searching the net trying to find info from contractors that have actually been over there to get the low down. I can't find a damn thing. Any of you done it or know someone who has? Any info that could help me make an informed decision would be greatly appreciated.

That comes out to ~$19.90 per hour. Is the economy that bad where you live?

I crunched the numbers and came up with over $23/hr. Maybe you were figuring in taxes I don't know. There are no taxes on the first $80,000 you make overseas if you're out of country 330 of 365 days. So it's all free and clear. I've also heard that you get a $1000/month bonus at the end of the contract if you complete the contract. I don't know if that's true or not, that's why I'm trying to get some first hand info. I'm going to be talking to the recruiter again tomorrow, so I'll ask about that among other things.

I know of a guy that was out there. He was paid well but there was always a small threat. Just because that the war was just over and the invasion of Iraq was starting.

What part will you be working in? The Uk army is going there over the next few weeks wth about 4k troops and that is going to increase. The security in the country is starting to get worse in the south. Thats what ive hard on the news anyway.
Who will guard the guards?

All the contractors have been kidnapped.

Seriously, no amount of money would convince me to work over there. It may seem like alot (especially since you dont have to fork over 15% to uncle sam) but I would consider it hazard pay.

365 days per year - 30 days off = 335 working days

12 hours per day x 335 days = 4020 working hours

$80,000 per year / 4020 hours = $19.90 per hour

You win.

No-- your not figureing in the overtime.

He does not HAVE to work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. Everything over 40 hours is time and a half.

He's not going to be salarie, thats the draw of these jobs. My cousin made 150,000 working for a contractor running electrical lines in Iraq.

You need to clarify the details. If your young and single a job like that can start you out right in life.
