Ok... couldn't help myself
I was up at advance auto getting replacement bulbs for the turn signal indicators. Got what I wanted and walked outside.
While I'm leaving a guy walks up to me, his girl in tow, and starts giving me a lecture on how unsafe bikes are and that his friend died while riding a bike and that they're horrible and don't have a right to be on the road.
I told him that I use the bike to get around, saves me money on gas, makes parking in D.C. easier and I agreed that they were dangerous but I was willing to accept that.
BUT HE WENT ON. Finally he told me that I need to do the responsible thing and get a car.
So I looked at him, tears in my eyes and shakingly said "My uncle died in a car accident".
I think he actually believed me but when his girlfriend started laughing his face turned red, and I swear he was going to try to tear into me but his girlfriend dragged him away still laughing.
It was a good day

I do not know what to say to this story. I wanted to say I read it though and am baffled by it. How to handle people like that is another question. I am wondering how old you are and also how old you think they were. Is this a time to just say" I'm sorry you feel that way" and walk away watching your back? or do you think they were setting you up. You thought the guy was going to get into it with you, could you have taken him? Did you plan that all important first shot in his nose, once the nose is broken you have a few seconds to dig in wile they can't see.

I would have just launched into a tirade on "safe-sex" and promiscuity...
Then ask him who the red head I saw him necking with last firday was...

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

So many different ways I could have taken that situation. Like I said I did try the I'm sorry you feel that way but I ride the bike for X Y Z reasons- but that just brought on more of a lecture so I decided be funny.Sevulturus wrote:I would have just launched into a tirade on "safe-sex" and promiscuity...

Could I have taken the guy? Lord knows, maybe he was a martial arts expert who flys around the world mastering every form of fighting imaginable or maybe he was just an opinionated asshat with a glass jaw. I'm not the kind of guy to randomly find out
At the same time, I don't think the guy set out to pick a fight in the middle of the day in front of advance auto parts on a thursday.

I agree with millheiser, except I wouldn't have even gone that far. I'm too old now to spend time listening to a-holes. After a couple of sentences, I would have said, "that's nice," turned, and resumed my business. People will say what they want. I don't have to react to 'em.
