riding downhill

#1 Unread post by ninja79 »

What's the proper technique for riding downhill? On a steep hill I pulled in the clutch and held the brakes. That's basically what I would do in a car. Is this how you would do it? What about a small hill?

Personally, I wouldn't be pulling the clutch or clicking neutral. I use a lower gear and engine braking, and apply brakes only if needed to keep the speed I want. I like being connected to the drivetrain while in motion in case I need it.

Unless nobody is watching. Then I drop a gear, hammer the throttle and play with some gravity-enhanced :peep: acceleration.
No Witnesses.... :shifty:

That's what I do, sometimes you need to drop two or 3 gears if it's really steep. Then you just ride the compression braking, like you would do if you were pulling up to a red light. Only this time gravity makes you accelerate, and your engine makes you slow. If you need to get going faster you just roll on the throttle then work your way up through the gears. Soooooo easy.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

isn't "engine braking" bad for the engine?

No X2 and coasting out of gear takes away all control of your vehicle, two or four wheeled....

well, if your going like 65 and try to drop it down to first to engine brake its probably bad for the engine as it will either redline or maybe stall and die or something. Id also be bad for you as i would guess that it would jerk and rock and maybe throw you off. But thats all just my speculation. To answer your 'q'. No its fine for it.

not that i would try it...

but my bike can reach 65 and probably tops off at 98mph at 1st gear. will it still be bad if i downshift to 1st?
