It was hard to type with the gloves on so I took them off.
That's true, they do beat regular jeans. But not by much. The kevlar only covers small areas and there's no padding at all.
Like anything else in motorcycling, it's all a matter of how much risk you're willing to take. Me, I'll take leathers over kevlar lined jeans any day.
Well, the kevlar covers the butt and the knees and that's what's going to have the most contact with the ground. Will they reduce impact from a highside? No. Reduce road rash from sliding? Yes. It's both cheap and easy to put in pads, although If I was going for a day of twisties I'd rather wear real MC pants. But for bopping about town or normal riding I find them both cooler and more comfortable than even mesh pants over shorts.
It's all about the comfort versus safety trade off.
If you are going to wear gear you wear gear that is usefull. No type of jeans are cooler than mesh pants with shorts under them so you may stop believing that now. Mesh pants lets almost all of air pass through. Look at the weave on mesh pants and compare it to the weave on jeans to show how silly that statement is.
There is no 'normal riding' that requires less gear if you are trying to be safe. If you get off doing any riding you want to be prepared. While maybe a drop at 5mph you may get off slightly better, normal riding speeds are the same as twisty speeds, in terms of when you actually crash.
Normal riding is when you get people turning left infront of you (which is one of the most common accidents). I would think you would want to be as prepared for the most likely accident situation.
Risk is part of it, but if you aren't planning to be prepared you might as well wear regular clothes. Full gear all the time, else you are just hoping for luck when you decide not to be fully protected. If you fall off your bike you usually land on the side of your thighs and parts of your butt. So unless the kelvar jeans cover all that area (i.e more than just your butt and knees) its rash for you.
