I wouldn't want you as a neighbor. You are a little rediculous with this speeding "crumb". Note: I don't go 50 in residential, just 40 . To Dirty, why did you pass him on the left? That makes little sense, especially since you said he was toward the middle of the road. Pass on the right next time.

I went for a ride with a friend a while back. We were waiting to turn right at a red light, there were two lanes coming towards us. There were 4 or 5 cars in the far lane, and the close lane (the one I was going to turn into) was empty. Because we had gotten there as the light turned red (for us) all the cars were lined up waiting to go. So I did a full stop, and put my foot down. Checked left then went.

Car suddenly slammed on its brakes behind me. The lady had changed lanes in the intersection and figured that I'd cut her off. Changing lanes in the intersection is illegal, but she blamed me for the near accident.

I don't know if passing on the left in a residential area is illegal... but it seems to me that if it's anything like my area you just crossed a solid yellow line (no passing). You're blaming this guy for your mistake.

To compound that problem, you slammed on your brakes and locked up your tire, indicating that you're still not in full control of your bike...

We aren't allowed to lanesplit/share either, so you might just haev a more liberal gov't lol.

It's illegal up here because of situations like that. You're required to have finished your lane change in time to brake BEFORE entering the intersection, or clear the intersection before attempting a lane change.

People change lanes in intersections fairly frequently. Doesn't seem to cause any special problem. Actually, I'd say it is less of a problem because people are already keyed up and aware as they enter an intersection so you have less of the "oh I drifted half-way into the other lane I might as well drift the rest of the way" type lane changes.

The reason for it is traffic that may be joining from the intersection in your direction of travel.

I hate it when people change lanes in the intersection. It's just sloppy driving. Here I am looking at a clear lane to make my right turn, then just as I move out, some guy in the middle of the intersection has decided to move into it.

Here in AZ, changing lanes in an intersection is illegal. At large intersections, the white lines dividing the lanes go solid, to remind folks it's too late to change.

So don't pull into an intersection while people are crossing it. I don't.

It isn't best practice, but its not bad practice either. If you have a reason to make a lane change, you need to make sure that your destination is clear. Once you can you take your new position, make the change as soon as you have clearance to safely change, and taking possession of your new lane assertively to discourage others from misunderstanding your actions and taking the same lane position. If that's inside an intersection... so be it.


The bad practice is changing lanes during a left hand turn where there are two left turn lanes. It's bad because it is usually inadvertent ... people just drift wide or turn tight... but without better driver ed (to teach people the proper line to follow through a turn) those intersections are risky anyway so you've got to be cautious and at that point it isnt' really a safety problem any more. And once it's not a safety problem, who cares? The goal isn't to make people conform to arbitrary rules, it's to keep people reasonably safe.
