Dealers See More Female Motorcycle Riders
Sales Among Women Up About 30 Percent
May 3, 2005

WARREN, Ohio -- Motorcycle dealers say they are seeing an increasing number of women taking to the open road riding on two wheels instead of four.

Owners of several dealerships say they have seen sales to women increase 20 to 30 percent in recent years. America's top motorcycle maker Harley Davidson says ten percent of its sales in 2003 were to women, compared with two percent in 1985.

Motorcycle dealers say new lightweight bikes that are lower to the ground make it easier for women to ride. Dealers also are expanding women's clothing lines and hiring more female employees.

Motorcycle enthusiast Nova Chasser says she got her first Harley Davidson motorcycle three years ago and has seen riding among women increase recently. Three of her friends got their licenses last year.

yep, it only took the dealers over 10 years to open there freakin' eyes and notice all the women who had been walking in and OUT of there shops...

a very sexist industry... but things are improving... unfortunately it takes the almighty dollar to wake some people up... seems ya still gotta buy respect in the world...

Seems like most motorcyle dealers in the UK need a BIG SLAP! As a woman in motorcycle dealers I get totally ignored! Bar one! Chapel Ash Harley dealers in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, UK. They were so nice and treated me with respect as a potential buyer that I did - buy a Harley! And the follow up from them and from Harley Davidson is totally unbelievable! Had the sport bikes and love the Harley because it is a TOTALLY DIFFERENT WORLD! And so nice if you are a single female to go places and be accepted! Can't fault it. Mennis!

My dealer has really gotten alot of gear specifically for women over the last few years. They have always been friendly and helpful to me and not ignored me like some other dealer's that I've walked into. That is one reason I bought my second Honda from them. Great group of people!

I've found BMW dealers to be accepting of women riders as well.

In fact, it was because the folks in the BMW booth at the area MC show where I'd gone, actually talked to ME instead of looking for the guy I was with, that I ended up buying my BMW in the first place.
