Yeah, but this also gets the local moto haters something to whine about, and what'll help get politicians re-elected. I like noise from bikes but not so loud that I think airliners over me are better. My Vulcan 500 maxes out at 87 dB and when revved up it's still pretty quiet as my neighbors and friends say they haven't noticed when I went by... I'm sure the 98 that a Gixxer puts out is reasonable just as long as they keep it down at night by switching gears.OoJRod06oO wrote:This might be useless if you really did leave (but I'd bet you're still checking this threadblack mariah wrote:All this will do is bring bike noise levels in line with car noise levels. They generally don't have big displacement, high revving bikes to make so much noise

Re: Nice of the U.N.
I've always said that it is harder to make a quite bike than a loud bike. If you search in the Total Motorcycle News One Forum for bike noise you'll find a lot of articles from local communities, govenors and fustrated people in general and they seem to be growing in voice and amount. I think we are on the cusp of something we all don't want if we keep on with the airplane exhaust as loud as all heck.JCViper528 wrote:With all the problems in the world today, and even corruption at their own headquaters, you'd think the U.N. would focus strongly on those things.
In a new issue of BIKE magazine there's an article about the U.N. targetting motorcycle exhausts and the noise they emit. The World Health Org and the U.N. are trying to make a worldwide standard for exhaust noise. The noise level aimed for? It's a "Hoover quiet" 81dB which the stock GSXR 600 won't pass (currently 100 dB) and Honda UK syas it might mean the end of under seat pipes.
"Impending legislation could mean ugly, oversized end cans, fewer aftermarket pipes and washing machine-quiet bikes for everyone." "Back in 2002 the UN decided all new bikes should have daytime running lights and at the stroke of a pen it was law overnight." - all from the article.
I'm all for noise limits but 81 is kinda low (my Vulcan is maxed to 87 dB). Maybe there's nothing to worry about... the AMA seems to be working with them closely...
I do promote individual freedom (no kiddin' right?) but when indiviual rights start infringing upon other peoples rights (like noise by-laws) we as bikers are ALL going to pay the piper on this one.
I'm crossing my fingers that loud pipes are fine to use if that's what a biker really wants but the laws that will come to clamp down on them will leave SOME "loud" pipes still legal.
Mike.

Cool, I was debating whether to put this in soap box or total motorcycle talk as it was about bikes and pipes.
And yeah, loud pipes are a nuisance but they get noticed by trailing drivers. The current Gixxer is 100 dB or so at redline so maybe 92 dB would be best so that way we are not bored with our rides and more noticeable to inattentive drivers behind.
I just pisses me off though that no matter how quiet a bike is someone will complain it's tool loud despite the Porsche Cayenne is louder than the Kawi Z750.
This will most likely affect the EU more than the US... hell they even made it harder to obtain a moto license but still churns out drivers dead in the head.

The U.N. does not have any real power. all theay can do is talk about sanctions that are never enforced, because the nations with the most influence can not agree on anything. you have two or three nations that veto whatever actions that are introduced. therfore renders the whole organization ineffictive.
