They are ectothermic poikilotherms(read: cold blooded) so their body temperatures are regulated by their surroundings. Well, any animal has an "optimum operating temperature" in which they function their best.

Rocks and especially asphalt(dark color) tend to hold heat very well, so snakes and other reptiles will often crawl out onto these objects to bask in the sun, and warm up from the heat retained in the asphalt.

we get shittons of worms all over the roads when it rains cause they get forced out of their holes, then they dont leave before the sun comes out and they dry up
