Virus

#1 Unread post by CNF2002 »

This may or may not be TMW related but I thought I'd relay it just in case. I was surfing the TMW site when it attempted to do a popup, a download prompt came up (which I declined) and my Norton reported a virus called bloodworm.

Reguardless if its TMW related or not (I'm sure it's not) I will look into this right away and report back on it to you. :D

Well so far I found out it's a FAKE virus, not a virus at all and Norton/Symantec doesn't even list it in their database either. So whatever it is, it's not real or its so new no one knows about it yet.

But not a computer virus, although I doubt downloading anything will help with a medical condition..haha

Its quite possible that it was called "bloodhound" not "bloodworm". Oops!

If it is called the bloodhound virus, then it is an email attachment virus. Sadly you had to have opened (or viewed) an infected email to have gotten it:

http://www.symantec.com/security_respon ... 99&tabid=2

It looks like Norton Symantec will automaticly remove it. Thankfully, it says: Risk Level 1: Very Low

Threat AssesmentWildWild Level: Low
Number of Infections: 0 - 49
Number of Sites: 0 - 2
Geographical Distribution: Low
Threat Containment: Easy
Removal: Easy
DamageDamage Level: Low
DistributionDistribution Level: Low

So it looks like its a very weak virus and easily removed. :D

Just FYI, as I feel its always nice to have extra information around things, so you can learn a little

Bloodhound is specific to Symantec (Norton) antivirus

Its the name of one of their virus spotting programs (looks for virus heuristics - sp?). if it see's something it thinks may be a virus, but doesn't recognise it, it flags it up as a bloodhound.????? virus (the ?'s being replaced with the specific test which identified it)

I would be surprised if it did come from the pop-up, but its always best to investigate. The good news is it sounds like Norton/Symantec spotted it, and protected your system from it

***EDIT***
Took a bit of hunting around, but here's all the naming conventions too, incase it intrigues you.
