Local traffic and conduct laws
As the 65th annual Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association Myrtle Beach Rally is set to begin, here are some things to keep in mind to survive the rally.
For 2005, Myrtle Beach officials will enforce parking at 1,550 meters starting as early as 6 a.m. and ending at midnight in some areas. Other meters will be enforced from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. There also was an hourly increase in cost from 75 cents to $1.25 in some areas. Multiple bikes can park in metered spots as long as the meter is paid, or each bike will get a violation. In paid lots, each bike owner must pay separately. The meters go from 29th Avenue South to 31st Avenue North. The fine for meter violations is $20.
In the Carolinas, motorcyclists must use their headlights at all times.
Motorcycle operators or passengers younger than 21 years of age must wear an approved helmet. Helmets are not required for those 21 and older in South Carolina, but they are required for all riders in North Carolina.
Excessive revving and acceleration can be considered a violation of the county's noise ordinance.
Vehicles parked on private property may be towed at the vehicle owner's expense.
In Myrtle Beach, police regulate cruising between Third Avenue South and 21st Avenue North on Ocean Boulevard between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. from March 1 to Oct. 1.
Right turns are allowed at red lights throughout the state unless indicated by a sign at the intersection.
Vehicle headlights must be turned on whenever windshield wipers are needed because of rain or poor road conditions.
Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal. Penalties include a fine of more than $200 and loss of driver's license.
It is illegal to sleep in a vehicle or on the beach at night.
Littering is illegal and punishable by fines.
Open containers of alcohol are prohibited in vehicles and public places, which includes sidewalks and beaches.
It is illegal to sell, possess, use or discharge fireworks within city limits, including beaches.
It is illegal to break, cut or destroy sea oat plants.
Thong bathing suits are prohibited in Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach and Surfside Beach.
Ocean swimming is not permitted 50 yards beyond the beach or in water more than chest deep.
It is illegal to jump or dive from a pier.
